THE ATLANTEANS ORIGIN

Solely — and for the first and only time — did the world learn from Plato (Tim. 24 e) that Athens once overwhelmed that >great military force which, coming from the Atlantic Ocean, advanced arrogantly against all of Europe and Asia Minor<. This notion of >arrogance<,  however, likely misrepresents the actual situation; for what was involved was the migration of peoples from the island and peninsula archipelago of the North and Baltic Seas (today comprising Jutland, Funen, and the surrounding island world).

From a historical perspective, this exodus of the Atlanteans — as I call it — is corroborated by Ramses III, who, in his >Year 8 Inscription< (1175 BC), indignantly complains (Medinet Habu, Plate 46, Line 75) that the Atlanteans... >had already formed a pact outside upon their islands<.  This reference to >outside< refers to the Mediterranean Sea, implying that the Atlanteans originated from >outside< the Mediterranean — specifically, from the Atlantic.

In full (Tim. 25 a/b): >On this island of Atlantis, a great and wonderful power of kings was united — a power to which the entire island was subject, as well as many other islands and parts of the mainland; furthermore, they held sway internally — here, extending from Libya as far as Egypt — and in Europe, as far as Tyrrhenia< (the ancient name for Italy).

Plain Talk: It is  n o t  >the wonderful power of kings< — to whom the island was subject — that is of interest here; rather , it is the >many other islands and parts of the mainland that were ruled by these kings<. In Plato’s account (Tim. 25 a/b), there is no mention whatsoever of a >single< island named Atlantis, but rather of a mainland-and-island/peninsula archipelago:

The North- and the Baltic Seas are two marginal seas of the Atlantic — the very ocean from which the Atlanteans originated. When asked where Atlantis was once situated, there is only one single option: the archipelago of Jutland and Funen, along with the surrounding island world.
